
As the world reflects on the legacy of Pope Francis, tributes from some of the biggest names in film, fashion, music and television are pouring in.
Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio, who met the pontiff in 2016, praised him as “one of the most extraordinary spiritual leaders of our time.” In an Instagram post Monday, the actor described Francis as “a transformational leader – not only for the Catholic Church, but also for environmental reform and activism.” He also reflected on the Pope’s appearance in his climate change documentary, “Before the Flood,” calling the experience “enlightening, deeply moving and thought provoking.”
Actor and comedian Whoopi Goldberg, who met the Pope twice, wrote on Instagram that “He was the closest in a long time that seemed to remember that Christ’s love enveloped believer and none believer.”
Eva Longoria, who met Francis in 2016, thanked him for using his voice to stand with those often left unheard. “Thank you for being an ally to many of us and speaking up for the marginalized,” she wrote on Instagram.
Musician Gloria Estefan paid tribute in both English and Spanish as she described the pontiff as a “fearless” leader. “Rest in peace and power, Pope Francis,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside the cross, peace sign and sunflower emojis.
Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, wrote in an Instagram story Monday: “No better example of total humility in kindness and compassion. Thank you for leading us not just with words, but with your unwavering service to humanity.”
Fashion designer Donatella Versace also acknowledged the Pope’s death, as she posted to her Instagram story: “Rest In Peace His Holiness Pope Francis.”
On X, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon shared a photo of his meeting with the Pope at the Vatican. “It was an honor meeting Pope Francis last summer,” he said. “I’m glad I made you laugh. Thank you for your encouraging words.”
Russell Crowe, who met Francis in 2014, also paid tribute on X. Alongside a photo of the Rome skyline, he wrote: “A beautiful day in Rome, but a sad day for the faithful.”
