Editor’s Note:This analysis was originally published in CNN’s Meanwhile in America newsletter. Read past issues and subscribe here. JD Vance is a different kind of vice president. He’s not the Machiavellian master of Washington who works in the shadows – like Dick Cheney. Neither is he the safe pair of foreign policy hands – like a George H.W. Bush or Joe Biden. The youthful Vance seems instead to have fashioned himself as the personification of his boss Donald Trump’s most extreme social media posts. His provocation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office last week ignited a diplomatic…

CNN  —  Every day, millions of travelers’ lives are literally up in the air, relying on the acuity of air traffic controllers to orchestrate high-speed maneuvers and help prevent aircraft from crashing. But the shortage of air traffic controllers is nearly the worst in 30 years, said the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, which represents 10,800 certified ATCs across the country. The shortfall has forced many to work “six days a week, 10 hours a day – for years at a time,” union President Nick Daniels testified at a House subcommittee hearing this week. The US needs more than 3,000…

CNN  —  For the first time since his hospitalization around three weeks ago, Pope Francis is showing a good response to treatment, a Vatican source told CNN. This follows a statement from the Vatican press office on Saturday that described “a good response to therapy” and a “gradual, slight improvement” since his episodes of acute respiratory failure on Monday. The Vatican source said that this improvement was due to the “gas exchange” in the lungs and the oxygenation of the blood. However, the risk remains of another breathing crisis remains and the prognosis is still reserved, the source emphasized. The…

This Sunday, Liberals finally tally the votes and announce their new leader, all as Canada’s…

CNN  —  House Speaker Mike Johnson formally unveiled plans on Saturday for a government funding stopgap through September 30 — a measure intended to stave off a potential March 14 shutdown and buy time for Donald Trump and GOP leaders to steer key pieces of the president’s agenda through Congress this summer. But Democrats’ top spending leaders quickly slammed the door on supporting the measure, raising the specter of a high-stakes clash next week. The president himself on Saturday endorsed the measure, which includes some cuts to domestic spending programs that Democrats will likely oppose. GOP leadership aides said Saturday…

Washington CNN  —  Prominent legal conservatives on Friday sought to tamp down a wave of sudden criticism directed at Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett over her vote to reject President Donald Trump’s attempt to freeze nearly $2 billion in foreign aid. Barrett, a former appeals court judge and law professor who Trump placed on the bench during his first term, joined Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s three liberals in upholding – for now – a lower court ruling that required the administration to quickly spend the contested aid. The backlash over that decision from some Trump allies…
