CNN  —  Russian President Vladimir Putin has unilaterally declared a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to coincide with World War II Victory Day commemorations, the Kremlin said Monday. The Kremlin said the decision was based on “humanitarian considerations” and that “all military actions” would be suspended from midnight May 8 to midnight May 11. Russia marks the defeat of Nazi Germany in a holiday celebrated on May 9. An adviser to the head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office responded by saying that “the ceasefire must be unconditional, because everything else is just Putin’s tactical games.” Moscow has…

Manchester, New Hampshire CNN  —  “The reckoning,” Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker told a room full of revved up Democrats in New Hampshire on Sunday night, “is here.” Appearing in the first presidential primary state ahead of what’s expected to be a major 2028 Democratic nomination cycle, Pritzker railed against the “Looney Toon Republican Congress” and included jabs at both President Donald Trump’s trade representative and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — but his speech was mainly directed at his fellow Democratic leaders. Too many of them have been wrong and out of touch about what the Democratic Party should stand for…

CNN  —  A ferry ushering families from a popular sand sculpting competition in Florida was struck by a recreational boat Sunday evening in an apparent hit-and-run, killing one ferry passenger and injuring several others, police and witnesses said. Brenda Alvarez, who is about eight months pregnant, was on the ferry with her husband and two young children when a crew member started yelling, “Hey, hey hey!” the family told CNN affiliate WFTS. Alvarez’s husband turned around to see a large boat “just come through” the ferry, he said. The other boat “shattered the whole back of” the ferry and “left…

CNN  —  President Donald Trump on Sunday night reiterated an extraordinary ambition he and members of his administration have voiced from time to time throughout his young second term: One day, Americans won’t pay any more income tax, and you’ll have Trump’s tariffs to thank for it. “We’re going to make a lot of money, and we’re going to cut taxes for the people of this country,” Trump said before boarding Air Force One for his return from Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome. “It’ll take a little while before we do that, but we’re going to be cutting taxes, and…

CNN  —  Oil markets have slumped in recent weeks over fears of a trade war between the US and China and a surprise decision by OPEC+ countries to increase output in May. That could spell trouble for some oil-dependent Middle Eastern economies. On April 8, oil futures slid to a four-year low as investors priced in the possibility of a recession, driven tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Although prices have risen slightly since then, a bigger recovery may not happen soon. Goldman Sachs said on April 13 that it expects oil prices to decline through 2025 and 2026, with…

CNN  —  Across the United States, local agencies have become immigration enforcers under a federal program officials say strengthens public safety, but critics warn spreads fear, erodes trust and threatens the fabric of immigrant communities. Known as the 287(g) program, it was created under the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act and allows ICE to authorize state and local law enforcement officers to perform specific immigration enforcement duties under ICE’s supervision. The program is seen by some as a way to rev up President Donald Trump’s effort on illegal immigration as the Department of Justice moves to prosecute…

CNN  —  Authorities in Japan have rescued the same climber from the slopes of Mount Fuji twice in the space of a week. The 27-year-old man was first rescued on Tuesday after falling ill, Shizuoka prefectural police told CNN on Monday. He had to be rescued again on Saturday after returning to the mountain to retrieve his belongings, including a cell phone, that he had left behind, they said. On Tuesday, the climber — a Chinese college student currently living in Japan — reached the summit, which sits at 3,776 meters (12,388 feet), before experiencing altitude sickness. On Saturday, he…

New York CNN  —  CBS News’ ‘“60 Minutes” addressed the surprise exit of its longtime executive producer Bill Owens on Sunday’s program, with anchor Scott Pelley saying that “no one is happy” about his departure. In an extraordinarily blunt final segment of the news magazine show, Pelley revealed that CBS’ parent company Paramount “began to supervise our content in new ways” as it tries to complete a merger with Skydance Media, with Pelley adding that Owens “felt he had lost the independence that honest journalism requires.” Owens announced last week he was leaving “60 Minutes” after 24 years with the…

CNN  —  More than 100 immigrants, allegedly in the country illegally, were detained in Colorado Springs after an overnight raid at what authorities described as an underground nightclub in a strip mall. “What was happening inside was significant drug trafficking, prostitution, crimes of violence,” Jonathan C. Pullen, the Special Agent in Charge at the DEA Rocky Mountain Division, said at a news conference Sunday morning. “We seized a number of guns in there.” Over a dozen active-duty military members were also at the club during the raid, and federal officials said some were working at the illicit operation. “We had…
