London AP  —  The right-wing party Reform UK led by Nigel Farage won a seat in Parliament by a handful of votes and looked set to make more gains in results Friday from local elections the party hopes will show it is a major player in British politics. Reform’s Sarah Pochin was declared winner of the seat of Runcorn and Helsby in northwest England by six votes after a recount, defeating Labour candidate Karen Shore. Labour easily won the district in last year’s national election, but its lawmaker, Mike Amesbury, was forced to quit after he was convicted of punching…

AP  —  Detailed Army plans for a potential military parade on President Donald Trump’s birthday in June call for more than 6,600 soldiers, at least 150 vehicles, 50 helicopters, seven bands and possibly a couple thousand civilians, The Associated Press has learned. The planning documents, obtained by the AP, are dated April 29 and 30 and have not been publicly released. They represent the Army’s most recent blueprint for its long-planned 250th birthday festival on the National Mall and the newly added element — a large military parade that Trump has long wanted but is still being discussed. While the…

CNN  —  President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to end federal funding for America’s two biggest public broadcasters, which have faced a series of attacks from the White House and Republican lawmakers accusing them of biased reporting. The order instructs the CPB’s board to terminate direct funding for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service to the “maximum extent allowed by law and shall decline to provide future funding.” It also orders the board to take steps to “minimize or eliminate” indirect funding to NPR and PBS. The executive order also…

CNN  —  The US stock market has been on a rollercoaster during President Donald Trump’s second term. The S&P 500 posted its third-worst 100-day start to a presidential term in US history, only behind Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon. The S&P 500 initially surged after Trump’s reelection in November on expectations for a pro-business boom. Yet as the president unveiled his plan for tariffs and has gone back and forth on trade policy, Wall Street has been shaken by historic levels of uncertainty and volatility. CNN is tracking the S&P 500’s performance each day across Trump’s second term to see…

CNN  —  A Gaza-bound activist aid ship caught fire and issued an SOS, after what it claimed was a drone attack off the coast of Malta in international waters in the early hours of Friday. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which is campaigning to end Israel’s blockade of Gaza, told CNN activists were aboard its ship carrying humanitarian aid when the alleged attack happened just after midnight local time (6 p.m. ET Thursday). “There is a hole in the vessel right now and the ship is sinking,” Yasemin Acar, the coalition’s press officer, told CNN by phone from Malta on…

Rome CNN  —  The pontificate of Pope Francis profoundly shook up the Catholic Church. His restless 12-year-papacy, with its focus on a “poor church for the poor,” called on Catholicism to leave its comfort zone and pitch its tent among the poorest communities. Francis opened discussions on topics that were once viewed off limits, such as the role of women. He welcomed LGBTQ Catholics as “children of God” and opened the door for remarried divorcees to receive communion. He also generated attention with his strong critiques of economic injustice and calls to protect the environment. Throughout his papacy, however, Francis…

CNN  —  President Donald Trump’s drastic policy moves, and the twists and turns that have come alongside them, have made economic forecasting a squirrely endeavor. The sheer uncertainty of what’s to come has put markets on the fritz and sent soft data (like consumer sentiment surveys) sounding alarms. Now, the hard data (tried-and-true economic metrics that are lagged for good reason) is starting to reflect some of the disarray. At 8:30 a.m. ET Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release the jobs report for April, and it’s expected that the US economy added 135,000 jobs and that…

New York CNN  —  Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) has been losing with corporate America, with one big exception: the people who actually own the companies. This year, investors at some of America’s biggest companies — Costco, Apple, Levi’s, John Deere, Goldman Sachs and others — have overwhelmingly voted against proposals targeting DEI programs. The proposals include requiring companies to scrap their DEI policies entirely or remove diversity goals from executive pay packages and audit the legal risks of pursuing DEI. Two conservative think tanks, the National Center for Public Policy Research and the National Legal and Policy Center, have…

CNN  —  House Republicans are starting to put some meat on the bones of their sweeping tax and spending cuts package, otherwise known as President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.” The package aims to extend the GOP’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, as well as fulfill several of Trump’s campaign promises, such as ending taxes on tips. To help offset these tax reductions, which would total trillions of dollars over a decade, the House is also looking for at least $1.5 trillion in spending cuts. Republicans are also signaling they will make good on other Trump campaign promises, such…
