CNN — President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to end federal funding for America’s two biggest public broadcasters, which have faced a series of attacks from the White House and Republican lawmakers accusing them of biased reporting. The order instructs the CPB’s board to terminate direct funding for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service to the “maximum extent allowed by law and shall decline to provide future funding.” It also orders the board to take steps to “minimize or eliminate” indirect funding to NPR and PBS. The corporation, however, is…
Hong Kong CNN — China says it is “currently assessing” proposals by the United States to begin trade talks, in a subtle tone shift that could open the door for negotiations. A spokesperson for China’s Commerce Ministry said in a Friday statement that “the US has recently sent multiple messages to China through relevant parties, hoping to start talks with China. China is currently evaluating this.” The comments signal a softening in Beijing’s position, which has been steadfastly defiant amid heightened tensions with the US because of President Donald Trump’s tariff war. Trump has been repeatedly saying since last week…

CNN — The disarray in Donald Trump’s foreign policy team is mirroring the chaos and uncertainty that he’s foisted upon the world in the last three months. The president’s ouster of national security adviser Mike Waltz on Thursday and his decision to hand Waltz’s White House portfolio to Secretary of State Marco Rubio comes at a fraught moment in international relations. The trade war that Trump ignited with China is beginning to damage the economy with no easy way out. The administration’s drive to forge peace in Ukraine is yet to bear fruit. And American soft power has been hamstrung…
CNN — New intelligence reviewed by US and Western officials suggests Russian President Vladimir Putin may have shifted his immediate focus in the Ukraine war toward the shorter-term objectives of solidifying his hold on territory his forces have seized and boosting his country’s struggling economy, multiple people familiar with the matter told CNN. This represents an evolution from recent US and Western intelligence assessments suggesting that Putin felt the state of the war was to his advantage, that he had the momentum as well as the manpower to sustain a longer fight against a faltering Ukraine and seize the entire…
CNN — President Donald Trump’s administration urged the Supreme Court on Thursday to unwind deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans that have been temporarily left in place by a lower federal court. At issue is a decision earlier this year by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to end a form of humanitarian relief known as temporary protected status for Venezuelan migrants. A group of Venezuelan nationals covered under those protections challenged the decision as a violation of the Administrative Procedure Act, which mandates specific procedures for federal agencies when implementing policy changes. They also argued that Noem’s decision…
CNN — Tariffs could add $900 million to Apple’s costs this quarter, Apple CEO Tim Cook said on Thursday, as he revealed the tech giant was shifting production of iPhones sold in the United States from China to India. “Assuming the current global tariff rates, policies, and applications do not change for the balance of the quarter and no new tariffs are added, we estimate the impact to add $900 million to our costs,” he told a quarterly earnings call. With some iPhone production having already moved to India in the past few years, Cook said he expected “the majority…
