New York CNN  —  PepsiCo is buying Poppi, the popular prebiotic soda brand, in a $1.65 billion deal. The move marks PepsiCo’s further shift into the “better for you” category as consumers shy away from sugar-filled drinks and unhealthy snacks. In January, the company bought Siete Foods, which makes gluten-free chips for $1.2 billion, and PepsiCo bought the remaining half of the Sabra hummus brand it didn’t own late last year. “We’ve been evolving our food and beverage portfolio over many years, including by innovating with our brands in new spaces and through disciplined, strategic acquisitions that enable us to…

CNN  —  Radio Free Europe streamed unflinching coverage of Russia’s war in Ukraine to Russians when the Kremlin banned its citizens from calling it a war. Radio Free Asia bravely exposed China’s mass detention of the Uyghurs, a predominately Muslim ethnic minority in the far west of the country. The Open Technology Fund helped fund the creation of Signal, the hugely popular encrypted messaging app. All three American government-funded outlets are in jeopardy now that the Trump administration has terminated all of the grant programs at the US Agency for Global Media, or USAGM. The administration said Saturday that the…

CNN  —  Recent court orders slowing down or indefinitely blocking President Donald Trump’s policy blitz have raised the specter that the executive branch might openly flout the federal judiciary and prompted questions about how judges would respond. Any decision by the administration to defy federal courts would immediately implicate profound constitutional questions about separation of powers that have kept each branch of the government in check for centuries. That’s in large part because it would test the power of courts to enforce rulings that are supposed to be the final word. The issue reached a fever pitch on over the…

New York CNN  —  A year ago, America was in a vibecession. The economy was in great shape (with some caveats), but the mood was disproportionately lousy. Today, the vibes and the economic data appear to be aligning. Just not in a good way. The vibe check in 2025: Consumers who powered the country through the worst of the Covid-19 recession are crying uncle. Sentiment is the lowest it’s been since 2022, when annual inflation climbed above 9% and the S&P 500 tumbled more than 19%. Home construction is way down. Consumer spending, the biggest driver of US economic growth,…

Hong Kong CNN  —  China has announced a wide-ranging “special action plan” to promote domestic spending, in an effort to counter the economic impact of tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. The initiative, announced Sunday by the official Xinhua news agency, is ambitious but short on specifics. It covered everything from boosting people’s incomes to establishing a childcare subsidy system, and expanding a “cash-for-clunkers” program to trade in old goods like cars and electronics. The plan builds on Premier Li Qiang’s promise during a major political meeting earlier this month to ensure that the “giant ship of China’s economy”…
