CNN  —  The Supreme Court on Monday said it would review a Colorado law that bars mental health professionals from practicing “conversion therapy” for minors, a discredited practice that attempts to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Kaley Chiles, a licensed counselor and practicing Christian, challenged that law under the First Amendment, claiming that her patients voluntarily seek out her services. Chiles, who was represented by the religious group Alliance Defending Freedom, argued that the laws enacted in Colorado and more than 19 other states “silence counselors’ ability to express views their clients seek.” But state officials countered…

Cannes, France CNN  —  The United States has extended its lead over other nations as the world’s biggest exporter of weapons, with Europe now its main customer. The US accounted for 43% of global weapons exports between 2020 and 2024, more than four times the share of France, the world’s second-largest exporter, according to new data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). That’s up from a 35% share commanded by America between 2015 and 2019, the think tank said in a report published Monday. CNN  —  Mark Carney has been elected leader of Canada’s Liberal Party in a months-long, high stakes race to replace Justin Trudeau. He will now be expected to lead the party into the next federal elections – which must be held before October, but could be called much earlier – where he is likely to face stiff competition from the Conservative party, which is currently leading in the polls. While Carney will take over immediately as Liberal Party leader, Trudeau will remain as Canada’s prime minister for an as-yet undisclosed transitional period while his successor settles in. One of the…

Jerusalem CNN  —  Mahmoud Muna looked on in disbelief as plain-clothes Israeli police officers rifled the shelves in his decades-old bookstore in occupied East Jerusalem. The officers were looking for books they deemed “inciteful,” and in the process detained him and his nephew, Ahmad, for 48 hours. The February raid on two branches of the Educational Bookshop – a well-known bookstore popular among Palestinians, Israelis and foreigners – was a widening of what critics describe as a crackdown on free speech in Israel that has intensified since Hamas’ October 7 attack. Witnesses to the raid said police were looking for…

CNN  —  America’s nearly five-year economic boom is starting to show its age. Cracks are forming in the economy’s foundation: Layoffs are mounting, hiring is slowing, consumer confidence is eroding and inflation is picking up speed. Although all of those things would almost certainly be happening if former Vice President Kamala Harris had won the election, the uncertainty that President Donald Trump’s economic policy has unleashed is exacerbating those problems. Tariffs — particularly the on-again, off-again nature of Trump’s dictates — are sowing confusion for businesses, consumers and investors alike, and they’re stoking concerns about inflation at a time when…

New York CNN  —  US stocks tumbled Monday, continuing a steep sell-off driven by concerns about the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on economic growth. All three major indexes opened sharply lower Monday after Trump said the US economy would see “a period of transition” and refused to rule out a recession, in an interview that aired Sunday. When asked on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures With Maria Bartiromo” if he was expecting a recession this year, Trump said “I hate to predict things like that. There is a period of transition because what we’re doing is very big.”…

CNN  —  The Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear the appeal of a California fire chief who claimed he lost his job because of his Christian faith, a case that could have made it easier for Americans to win discrimination lawsuits against employers. Ronald Hittle, a 24-year veteran of the fire department in Stockton, California, said he was fired after attending a two-day Christian conference on city time. The city countered that Hittle had been instructed to attend a “leadership” conference and told the high court in a brief that the chief had a long history of disobeying direction…
