AP — The Internal Revenue Service is drafting plans to cut its workforce by as much as half through a mix of layoffs, attrition and incentivized buyouts, according to two people familiar with the situation. The people spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to disclose the plans. The layoffs are part of the Trump administration’s efforts to shrink the size of the federal workforce through billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency by closing agencies, laying off nearly all probationary employees who have not yet gained civil service protection and offering buyouts to almost all federal…
First Trust Advisors L.P. chief economist Brian Wesbury discusses whether Trump tariffs will impact inflation on ‘Varney & Co.’ President Donald Trump earlier this week promoted tariffs as a way to bring furniture-making manufacturing to North Carolina. The president said Monday that he “used to go” to the Tar Heel State to “buy furniture for hotels” and that its furniture manufacturing business has “been wiped out.” “That business all went to other countries, and now it’s all going to come back into North Carolina, the furniture manufacturing business,” he said. President Donald Trump signs a series of executive orders in the…

CNN — US prosecutors on Wednesday announced criminal charges against a dozen Chinese nationals for allegedly hacking a range of US companies, government agencies and municipalities, in some cases for profit and causing millions of dollars’ worth of damage. Victims of the hackers include US-based critics of the Chinese government, Asian government foreign ministries, and US federal and state agencies, the Justice Department said. Some of them were hacked as recently as last year. The charges are the first major hacking-related national security case brought under President Donald Trump’s Justice Department, though the investigation began long before Trump took office.…
CNN — President Donald Trump’s administration took a major step Wednesday in support of states with sweeping abortion bans, dropping a Biden-era lawsuit against Idaho that sought to protect abortion access in medical emergencies. The Biden administration had prevailed in early stages of the lawsuit challenging Idaho’s extremely strict abortion restrictions, with the Supreme Court last year leaving in place a temporary court order that allows Idaho hospitals to provide abortion when a pregnancy endangers a woman’s life or health. In a court filing Wednesday, the Justice Department said it was now dropping the lawsuit. The move will not change…

New York CNN — Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency team is reportedly using artificial intelligence to guide its cost-cutting decisions, a tactic AI experts say could cause security breaches, biased firing choices and cuts of highly qualified, essential government staffers. “It’s just so complicated and difficult to rely on an AI system for something like this, and it runs a massive risk of violating people’s civil rights,” said David Evan Harris, an AI researcher who previously worked on Meta’s Responsible AI team. “I would go so far as to say that with the current AI systems that we have,…
